In the Pursuit of Noble Resolutions (January 2004)

Finally, brethren, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence,
if there is anything worthy of praise,
think about these things.
Philippians 4:8

As we celebrate the Three Hierarchs, (St. Basil, St. John Chysostom & St. Gregory) the "fathers of education" on January 30th, it is appropriate to ask ourselves the simple question. "When is a person educated?" Is it when a high school or college degree is attained? Is it when one has technical knowledge, or accumulates data and facts? Or is one considered educated when she possesses wealth, or social status?

The church fathers agreed that in all times, the educated person is the one who has good character, is thoughtful, kind and considerate, respectful, modest, unassuming, searching, and inquisitive.

In brief, the educational ideal of our Greek Orthodox roots is the development of the human being into a cultivated person possessing faith in a core of values centered in Christ.

It is a person who persistently strives to love, forgive, and have compassion in every day life until the 'icon' of the god-man, "theanthropos", is formed in him or her.

You see, the ultimate purpose of education was to develop and nurture the qualities that made someone 'ton kalon k'agathon anthropos', (the beautiful and good person). Contemplation of the beautiful and good not only educates the soul but it also shapes the inner person to the ideals of excellence!

I'm sure many have begun the New Year contemplating the pursuit of noble resolutions that could change our life, shape the inner person, or add deeper meaning to life.

As members of the Holy Apostle community, I would like to encourage everyone to make it our goal to develop and nurture the qualities that help shape us in God's image. May we ask God to help us spend time in truly forming the inner person to become "ton kalon k'agathon anthropos."(to become "Christ like")

Once we decide to get serious about becoming like Christ, we will naturally begin to act in new ways. We will let go of old patterns and embrace a new journey and healthy spiritual routines that open up a holy space for us. May this "holy space" be guided by compassion, love and excellence.

This month, I look forward to meeting with you for the blessing of your home or apartment. May Christ our Lord guide and direct our lives to love and serve Him.
