Today the Orthodox Church commemorates the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear the Son of God. This great feast marks the beginning of our salvation, as the Theotokos' humble acceptance of God's will makes possible the Incarnation of Christ. Even during Great Lent, this feast is celebrated with great joy, and the fast is relaxed to permit fish, wine, and oil.
