The Orthodox Church commemorates St. Thomas the Apostle, one of the Twelve Disciples of Christ. This feast celebrates the life and ministry of St. Thomas, known for his initial doubt and subsequent profound confession of faith in the Risen Christ.
The name Thomas means, "twin." He was a Galilean by birth, but traveled far to carry the message of Christ into the world. Tradition says that he preached to the Parthians, Pesians, Medes, Hyrcanians, Bactrians, and neighboring nations. St. Thomas is known to have founded the Orthodox Church in India. According to tradition, he arrived on the Malabar coast of Kerala in 52 A.D. and established seven churches.
