The Orthodox Church commemorates St. John the Evangelist and Theologian, the beloved disciple of Christ. This feast celebrates the life and writings of St. John, who gave the Church some of its most profound theological writings in his Gospel, three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. His spiritual insights and understanding of Christ's divine nature as the eternal Word of God earned him the title "Theologian."
St. John was from Bethsaida of Galilee, the son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of James the Elder. Originally a fisherman, he became Christ's beloved disciple and was the only one of the Twelve to follow Him to the Cross. There, Jesus entrusted His Mother to John's care, making him like another son to the Theotokos.
