Getting and Cleaning Our New Chairs

As our beautiful building has come closer to completion, one question has weighed heavily on the hearts and minds of the Furniture and Building Committees: "Where's everyone gonna sit?" Our old orange chairs, sturdy though they are, were not sufficient in number to fill our newly expanded nave. Many conversations were had. Should we buy new? Reupholster our old chairs? Use some combination of old and new, even if the seating didn't match? Committee members swapped countless Facebook Marketplace listings for low-cost pews and chairs.

And then, Providentially, just when the building was in a position to actually absorb dozens and dozens of chairs, a new listing: "180 Wooden Church Chairs." The photo showed chairs very similar in style to our old orange ones, but upholstered in Byzantine red fabric and available for a great price in Mukilteo. In quick succession, checks were signed, moving trucks were rented, and volunteers were coordinated.

Within a week, an incredible and tireless group of parishioners had moved, unloaded, and thoroughly cleaned every chair. They steam-cleaned the upholstery, ironed off old wax, scrubbed away mystery gunk with steel wool, and polished the wood. By the time the chairs were placed in the nave itself, they looked purpose-made for the space.

To everyone involved in moving, hauling, stacking, de-waxing, polishing, and cleaning our beautiful new chairs: thank you!
